03-OCT-2020: Mahatma Gandhi remembered
ALIGARH October 3: A number of commemorative programmes were held at various departments of the Aligarh Muslim University to mark the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Mr Rajan (Research Scholar, Banaras Hindu University, Banaras) won the first prize of Rs 1500/- in an online essay writing competition organized by the department of Philosophy on "Human Existence in COVID-19 Pandemic", marking the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Mr Ferdous A Choudhury (Aligarh Muslim University) and Miss Anjali Rajak (Presidency University, West Bengal) won Rs 1000/- and Rs 500/- respectively as the second and third prizes in the competition.
Prof Latif Hussain S Kazmi (Chairman of the department and Patron) said that in the Poster Making Competition, Ananya Rout (Class VI, DAV Public School, Bhubaneswar) won Rs 1500/- cash as the first prize while Shehnaz Begum (BA LLB, AMU Murshidabad Centre) and Aliza Farooqi (Class V, DPS, Civil Lines, Aligarh) got Rs 1000/- and Rs 500/-, respectively as second and third prize.
Mr Shahidul Hoque (Assistant Professor and Convener) urged the participants to imbibe the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and mould their lives in the light of his ideals.
The Centre for Distance Education organized a two-day commemorative programme to mark the occasion. A documentary was screened on Mahatma Gandhi's life, works and ideology on the first day while an online quiz on Mahatma Gandhi was held on the second day. A large number of students and research scholars from different parts of the country participated in the quiz.
Prof Mohammad Nafees Ahmad Ansari, Director of the centre said that the objective behind screening the documentary film was to revisit Gandhi's philosophies and ideals and mark their relevance in the present-day context. It took the audience through the life journey of Mahatma Gandhi providing insight into the major events of his life. The screening of the film concluded with a short discussion on Gandhi's ideas.
He said that e-certificates were given to all the participants of Quiz who scored more than 50 percent marks in the event, in which a large number of students participated.
A week-long online film festival was organized by the department of Tashreeh Wa Munafeul Aza on Zoom. Dr Aisha Aijaz (Assistant Professor and Convener) informed that several short documentaries were screened during the week-long film festival which included "Mahatma Gandhi‚??s Inspirational Quotes on Success", "The Story of Mahatma Gandhi: The Man of the Millennium" and "Unknown Facts of Mahatma Gandhi".
At the AMU City Girls' High School, Principal, Dr Alamgir shared anecdotes from Gandhiji's life. He discussed the role of Mahatama Gandhi in helping the country achieve independence through non-violence. He shed light on various incidents of freedom movement initiated by Mahatma, including the Dandi March, Swadeshi Movement and civil disobedience.
On this occasion, rich tributes were also paid to former Prime Minister, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri who contributed a lot to the nation's agricultural and industrial development. Dr Alamgir remembered Shastri Ji for giving the historical slogan, "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan".
