Urdu Academy

Centre for Professional Development of Urdu Teachers

(URDU ACADEMY)

 

The project to establish a “Centre for Professional Development of Urdu Teachers”, submitted by Aligarh Muslim University on 8th October 2006 was approved by University Grants Commission vide letter No.F.49-3/2004(CU) dated October 2006.

The project submitted by University envisage that the “purpose of conducting in-service education programmes is to professionally empower all teachers of Urdu Medium Schools – in their respective subjects areas, skill in translation and understanding the society and the students”.

For this objective, the other centre will conduct

1.      Refresher Course for Primary School to Higher Secondary level, Urdu Medium School teachers at regular basis.

2.      Prepare teaching material for various levels of teaching in Urdu Medium School.

3.      Translate relevant material from English and other languages into Urdu.

 

University Grants Commission  approved the project with reasonable financial assistance alongwith positions for the centre.

Faculty positions approved were:

One Professor / Director

One Reader / Deputy Director

Two lecturers

One – translator

Alongwith supporting staff for the office.

·        As sum of 325.00 lacks were granted for the construction of building including hostel, furniture and furnishing.

Apart from construction cost, a grant of 55 lacks for equipment, books and journals and rupees 20 lack as programme cost were also provided to the centre /Urdu Academy.

Academy started functioning in the month of October 2006, itself.

In the year 2007-2008 the following programmes were organized.

1.      Centre has conducted three refresher courses for Urdu Medium School Teachers.

Fourth refresher course for fifty school teachers is in progress in which teachers of Aligarh District are participating.

2.      Eminent scholars were invited for lectures on various aspects of Urdu Language and Literature.

3.      Conference of All India level were organized to discuss the programmes and academic activities of the centre.

4.      A  workshop on “analysis of text” was organized in collaboration with Urdu Department.

The paper presented in this workshop are being published.

§      Syllabus for ‘Certificate Course in Computer Tying’ for in-service teachers is ready and has been approved by Board of Studies.

§      ‘Model Lesson Plans for every level of school teaching’ is being prepared. The first plan to teach literary text at primary school level is ready for publication.

§      A course in Spoken Urdu is also being prepared for in-service Urdu School teachers to hone-up their skills in spoken Urdu.

 

A rich library of almost three thousand five hundred books worth Rs.8,00,000/- has came-up in the Centre /Academy which include books on Education and Urdu Language and Literature.

Building of the Centre/Academy is under construction. C.P.W.D. has been entrusted with the construction work.

Future plan of the Centre / Academy includes translation of relevant teaching material from English and other languages into Urdu.

A teachers training course for Primary School Teachers level at B.T.C. pattern is being prepared.

This syllabus will be sent to National Council of Teachers Education (N.C.T.E.) for approval.

In the last one year and four months, academy has taken care of the objectives set for the centre.

Growing interest of Urdu teachers of schools in the working of academy and large attendance at various functions of the academy is very encouraging.

In the years to come academy will organize such refresher courses in other cities of U.P., Bihar and West Bengal.
