The Faculty system was introduced in January 1944 during the Vice Chancellorship of Dr. Zia-u’d-din Ahmad (1941 to 1947). Four faculties namely, Theology, Arts, Science and Engineering were established. The Faculty of Science was established on 27th March 1944 and it comprised of Departments of Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Botany, and Zoology. In May 1986, the Faculty of Life Sciences (including departments of Botany and Zoology) was created. Presently the Faculty of Science comprises of seven departments,

Currently the Dean of the Faculty of Science is Prof. (Mrs.) Arunima Lal. She was born on 11th January 1949. She comes from the discipline of Chemistry. She did her graduation, post graduation and Ph.D. from Lucknow University. Her field of specialization is Inorganic Chemistry. She has a brilliant academic career, her area of research is coordination chemistry, She joined A.M.U., in 1969 as Lecturer. She has served AMU in various capacities as Chairperson, Department of Chemistry (2006-2009), Principal Women’s College (2007-2008), Member-Women’s Cell (2007-2008), Provost Abdullah Hall (2007) and Assistant Proctor (1993-1994).
