(Department of Physics), in an article published in the Urdu fortnightly 'Tahzibul
Akhlaq' (Vol 3, No 20, 1984), proposed establishment of an institution under
the patronage of the Aligarh Muslim University to help Indian Muslims, in the
field of Science. The suggestion was warmly welcomed by the then Vice
Chancellor, Mr. Saiyid Hamid, and with the assistance of Dr. S. A. Hashim Rizvi
and Dr. Farhan Mujib (Department of Physics) and Prof. K.M. Bahauddin (Pro-vice
Chancellor) the proposal was restructured and was given a concrete shape. Thus,
to focus attention on the backwardness of Muslims in science education and to
take steps towards its improvement, Aligarh Muslim University established the
Centre for Promotion of Science on March 26th
in 1985, under the provisions of its Act.
