The Department of Physics of AMU, one of the oldest Departments in Northern India, was established in 1912 and has a long tradition of quality teaching and research. Dr. Wali Mohammad, who had the distinction of being a student of Professor J. J. Thomson at Cambridge, was appointed Professor of Physics in 1912. The first M.Sc. and Ph.D. (Physics) degrees were awarded, respectively, in 1923 and 1934. The UGC selected this Department for DRS in 1976. It was granted infra-structural support under the COSIST programme of UGC in 1987 and DSA during 1983-2003. The DST has chosen the Department for aid under its FIST programme. The Department has 40 faculty members. It imparts teaching to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Department offers specialization in Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Physics, Electronics, High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, Spectroscopy and Laser Physics at M.Sc. It also effectively runs M.Phil and Ph.D programmes in various branches of Physics. At least two refresher courses are conducted by the Department every year in collaboration with the Academic Staff College of the University. The Department is involved in many reputed International and National collaborations.
