Our Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier (Retd.) Syed Ahmad Ali joined A.M.U in 2012 after a very illustrious career spanning over 35 years in the Indian Army. Born in Allahabad in a distinguished family of 'Zamindaars', he obtained his early education from St. Joseph's College, Allahabad. Immediately after his graduation from Allahabad University in 1976, he qualified the Combined Defence Services Exam (UPSC) wherein he stood 10thin the order of merit. He then joined the Army in the same year (1976) and was commissioned into the Infantry (KUMAON REGT) in 1977.
While in Army,Brig Ahmad Ali had the unique honour of tenanting some of the most prestigious and coveted appointments in every rank. Brig Ali comes to us with a vast operational and administrative experience. His key assignments include Instructor at Infantry School, Brigade Major and Commanding Officer of an Infantry Battalion in J & K, Colonel General Staff of a Division, Director Financial Planning at Army HQ, and Commander Army Component in the Tri Services Command in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Commander Lucknow Sub Area and Directing Staff at Army War College, Mhow.
He has seen active operational service in Nagaland, Sri Lanka and J & K. He has been Advisor to the Govt. of Seychelles and was instrumental in promoting bilateral ties between the two countries. As Director Financial Planning at Army HQ, the officer was responsible for the planning, control, allocation and monitoring of the Army's budget and was a single point interface with the MoD, Govt. of India. He has also served as a member of Indo-US Executive Steering Committee and contributed immensely for the promotion of bilateral military ties.
Brigadier Ali's illustrious career in the armed forces and now as the Pro Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is a testimony to his quest for academic excellence.
He completed his M.Sc. in Defence Studies from Madras University in 1990 with distinction followed by Masters in Management Sciences from Osmania University in 2002. He went on to complete Advance Course in Management from All India Management Association, New Delhi.
During his innings in the Army, the Officer was selected to undergo the prestigious Staff Course at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and Higher Defence Management Course at College of Defence Management, Secunderabad, besides half a dozen other professional courses.
As the Pro Vice Chancellor of AMU, Brigadier Ali played a pivotal role in achieving several milestones for AMU. As Chairman of the NAAC Committee he demonstrated asignificant role towards the University obtaining 'A' grading and standing first in the list of 130 Universities /Colleges with CGPA of 3.35 out of 4. The introduction of semester system for all courses entrance test for the undergraduate courses, holding of faculty selection committees, focus on faculty development, setting up of Innovation Council and Patents Cell are few of the many contributions of the Pro Vice-Chancellor. He is also looking after the functioning of the three outlying centers located at Mallapuram (Kerala), Kishanganj (Bihar) and Murshidabad (West Bengal).
Under his watchful eyes and supervision,AMU has significantly climbed the ladder of the rankings for Universities during 2014.As on date the University is ranked #3 in India (Times London), #5 (The Week), and #6 (India Today).
He has been assigned the overall responsibility for the financial, academic and other administrative activities of one of the largest Universities in India comprising of 101 departments of studies, 18 centers, 12 faculties including Engineering, Medicine, Management and Law withover 33, 000 students on its rolls.He also oversees the functioning of schools which the University operates and which serve as feeder institutions to the University.
His administrative acumen is best gauged from the fact that for the past three years the University has not witnessed any disturbance such as strike or agitation by any group or Union.
He is the pointsman of the University with the UGC, AICTE and MHRD, and has been instrumental inforging academic alliances with leading universities of the world such as Ohio State University (US), Mercer University (US), Thammasat University (Thailand) and Teheran University (Iran) to name a few.
His quest for academic excellence at AMU has been another feather in his cap.A voracious leader and an excellent speaker, Brig.Ali true to his soldier's creed has led from the front coordinating, monitoring and participating in innumerable national and international seminars, symposiums and workshops conducted by the various departments of the university.
His deep concern and sense of responsibility for the students can best be measured with his concern for their professional and post academic well being and success. With this objective he has instituted Placement Cell in each department. He has personally seen to it that job placements with marquee firms like Google, TCS, Wipro, L&T, ICICI Bank, Indian Army etc. are norm of the day for students.
The University has been given a facelift with special attention to landscaping and restoration of heritage buildings, establishment of a world class University Museum, Auditorium and Art Gallery.He has been the pivotal force in the Government's approvalfor the Faculty of International Studies with eight new departments, including departmentsof Foreign Languages and Department of Strategic Studies, Institute of Pharmacy and several new Departments in various other Faculties.
In appreciation for his love and promotion of Urdu language, the Government of India has appointed him as Chairman of the Committee for Development of Urdu Language on 17th Dec 2014.
Brig.Ahmad Ali is a recipient of Sena Medal for his distinguished services during OPERATION VIJAY (Kargil War), Chief of Army Staff Commendation (twice) for exemplary services rendered as Sub Area Commander, Lucknow and Army War College, C-in-C Commendation Card for services in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Sir Syed Literary Mission Award for 2014. A keen hockey, tennis and golf player, his hobbies include photography, reading and trekking.
His multi faceted persona is best appreciated when the varied vectors such as military service, academic interests, professional excellence and aesthetic pursuits converge to make one exceptional personality.
Brig. Ahmad Ali is married to Mrs. Rizwana Ali, an active social worker and accomplished housewife. They have twin sons, Lutfi and Rushdi who are working abroad in prestigious appointments.
