24-DEC-2016: The Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET) Batch 1987-1991 today met at their Alma Mater for a Silver Jubilee Reunion to reminisce the wonderful memories. The Inaugural Function of the Reunion took place at the Assembly Hall of ZHCET.
While delivering the Keynote address, the Chief Guest to the Function, Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) asked the ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 to relive their years spent the University. He urged the alumni gathered for the reunion to also take a tour of the University and see the significant changes, which have taken place.
"You will find smart-class rooms, new roads, new buildings, an overall better infrastructure and better teaching and studying facilities among many other things, during you trip to the various departments and faculties in the University," added the Vice Chancellor.
He further said that the vast renovation work of Strachey Hall and Kennedy Hall is almost complete, while a new building for Dawakhana Tibbiya College and J N Medical College Auditorium are also in the stages. "Frank and Debbie Islam Management Complex will be inaugurated very soon and an Olympic size Swimming Pool has been inaugurated recently," said the Vice Chancellor.
Gen Shah also urged the alumni to visit the University more often and give guest lectures for sharing their industry experience with the students. He said that the university is greatful to the alumni for their monetary contribution and looks forward for having alumni-student interaction.
"I request our distinguished alumni to come forward and extend moral and financial support, which will go a long way in making AMU No 1 University in the country," said the Vice Chancellor adding that the alumni will be happy to learn that AMU has been graded as the second best Indian University by the US News and World Report for the second consecutive time.
He also pointed out that AMU also runs ten schools, which are feeder institutions to the university and students attending these schools are taught information technology from Class 1.
In a special address, Professor Mohammad Idrees, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology said emotions must be running high as the alumni gathered today re-visit their Alma Mater, while introducing their families to the University, which is so dear to them.
He added that the University stands happy and proud to see that the students of the ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 have proved themselves by reaching the at the best positions of their respective fields.
Prof Idress further urged the alumni to pay back in the best possible ways suited to them. "There have been important changes in the University and more initiatives are awaited, the alumni can share their industry experiences with the present students besides other valuable contributions," said Prof Idrees.
During the Inaugural Address, Prof M M Suyan Beg, Principal, ZHCET said that reunion and nostalgia are synonymous as it is a flashback to those glorious years spent together. He added that the chance of introducing our families to our bachelor day's friends is both exciting as well as blushing and a sense of accomplishment is accompanied by quiet prayers on the lips that a secret or two from those days should not slip out.
Prof Beg further said that reunion is also a time to carry on with this legacy for our future generations to continue to reap the harvest. "The alumni can also give lectures, training, mentoring and placement advices among many other contributions, they can make," said Prof Beg.
He pointed out that a silver jubilee is an ideal time as we turn mature enough to weigh pros and cons of various alternative ways of paying back. "It is in this perspective that I wish to welcome the reunion of ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 and we will try to be the best host.
During the welcome address, Mrs Fawazia Tarranum, ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 alumnus and President of the Organising Committee said that she graciously acknowledges valuable guidance and support provided by her batch mates and members of the Reunion's Organising Committee for successfully conducting the programme. She pointed out that it was in December 2015 that the Organising Committee became sure that they are ready for this event.
Mrs Fawazia also announced that as a gesture of the alumni's commitment to give back to the Alma Mater, the AMU Engineers Trust is donating a sum of Rs 9.5 lakhs towards the IT infrastructure development of the Electronics and Electrical Departments of the Engineering College. The cheque for the donation was later presented to AMU Vice Chancellor. Meanwhile, a Soni Saran Singh scholarship of Rs one lakh was also announced during the function.
After the Vice Chancellor released 'Reflections', a commemorative Coffee Table book about the ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 alumni, the Chief Editor of the Book, Captain S M Urooj Athar, who is also a ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 alumnus said that it was when the discussions began about organising a reunion function, I suggested publication of this memoir and I knew that the idea would find resonance with most of my batch mates.
Mementoes were later presented to the Guests. ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 alumni Mrs Babita Bhargava and Mrs Seema Kumar Singh conducted the programme and proposed the vote of thanks respectively. Ms Seema Bedi, the treasurer of the AMU Engineers Trust was also present on the occasion and so were 225 people, which included the ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 alumni and their family members.
Meanwhile, the webcast of the event was watched live by many more alumni and non-alumni across the world through the University website. The alumni of the 1987-91 batch have brought laurels to their Alma Mater, being high achievers across various fields of activities, both in India as well as abroad, in public sector as well as private sector.
Later in the day panel discussions and interactive sessions were also held to help the University students prepare for the challenges of post-college life.
In the afternoon, a tree plantation drive was organised in the college premises as a symbolic gesture towards a greener future for the University with a hundred saplings been planted. Special displays were organised at the Skating Rink and the Riding Club. The culminating function of the Reunion event was the scintillating cultural evening put together by the University Drama club at the Kennedy Hall.
