Union High School, AMU, Aligarh.
ABK Union High School was founded in 1946
by AMU Students Union as Madarsa some where at Jamalpura. Mr Ashfaq Ali
Khan was Vice-President and Qazi Saleemuddin was Hony, Secretary of AMU
Students’ Union when the school was started. Till 1952 Vice-Chancellor
used to be the President of AMU Students’ Union. Initially the school
was established with the aim to teach Urdu and impart lesson in the
recitation of the Quranul Majeed to the Children of the IV grade
employees of the Universality as well as educationally down trodden
sections of the Muslim Community residing around the Campus.
The Madarsa was shifted to a big room near
Sir Syed Hall in 1950. The present building of the Girls’ Section near
the Union Hall was built by the then Vice-Chancellor Dr. Zakir Husain.
In 1963 the Madarsa became a primary School and started imparting
session upto class V. Prof Abdul Baseer Khan was senior Professor in
Zoology Department as having high reputation among the teachers and
students as well he was also the Hony, Treasurer of AMU Students’ Union
and made great contribution for the school. In 1988 the school was
rechristened as Abdul Baseer Khan Union School and upgraded to Junior
High School. In 1985-86 the Boys’ Section was established at Emadul Mulk
Road. In 1995-96 only the University Employees children were allowed to
appear at class IX and in 1996-97 class X as private students at the
Board Examination of AMU along with other school of the University.
Later in 1998 all the students of the
school studying in class VIII were allowed to appear as private students
at the AMU Board Examination. Since then the students of this school
have been appearing at the AMU Board Examination with a private status.
The school till date is totally self-financed. Presently there are
nearly 2800 students in both the sections. The Girls’ Section holds
classes from K.G to class X. Upto class V is Co-education and from class
VI to X girls’ students are taught in the Girls’ Section and boys’ are
taught at the Boys’ Section”- The Boys’ Section has a large open field
as play ground with U shape school building. It has a turf Cricket Pitch
which is rarity in Aligarh City. The School has developed substantial
sports Culture. Both the sections are partly double storeyed building.
There are 24 class rooms in Girls Section and 19 class rooms in the
Boy’s Section except Science lab, library, staff room and administrative
office. From this year basic computer education is being provided to
class IX & X students. Both the sections have separate Science labs
where students are exposed to Science practical throughout the academic
session. The School is still short of a good library facility and a
computer lab. From this year two sections of class XI (one PCB and one
Arts)have also started in Girls’ Section for the internal students. By
virtue of being the patron of AMU students’ Union Vice-chancellor Prof
P.K. Abdul Azis is the patron of the School also. Prof V.K. Abdul Jaleel
is the Manager and Dr. Mohd Abbas Niazi is the Principal of the school.
There are 94 teachers at present in both sections engaged in imparting
education in various disciplines.
